At the present moment, I have 4 books about Japan that I have started but yet to finish. I just started a book yesterday called Japanland, written by an American woman who spends a year in Japan "discovering how maddenlingly complicated it is being Japanese". In the book, she visits a school of sumo wrestlers at a sumo training stable which further sparked my interest in the sport and its rituals. Japan is the only country where sumo is practiced professionally and I sure hope I will have a chance to see a match or run into a wrestler on the subway. Sumo is a very strict sport that is marked by ancient traditions. The rules of combat are rather simple: no part of the sumo's body can touch the ground (except feet) and he can't step out of the ring.
